What could a volunteer and tiny pea crab have in common?
On the outer banks of Roanoke Island, North Carolina there is a unique type of oyster found nowhere else in the world, it’s called a crab slough oyster. This tiny oyster’s life cycle proves there is no job too small.
They are harvested only during a short season between October and March. Their flavor is said to be unmatched as the oysters are buttery, sweet and perfectly briny. Although there is something more to their story, a tiny pea crab lives inside!
Not long after birth, the dainty crab attaches to the oyster, growing no bigger than a piece of corn. Harmoniously, the two share the space, but why? Inside the shell, the crab has one job for its entire lifespan, to nurture the oyster with its tiny claws. With constant care and dedication, the most unique and sought after delicacy is created.
Just like the mission of the pea crab, despite its tiny size or short time with the oyster it is a true miracle in existence. Similar to that of a Trinity Cafe volunteer‘s brief interaction with our hungry neighbors, touching their lives day after day for just a few short hours. Volunteers using their time restoring a few moments of humanity by showing respect and dignity, diligently serving one nutritious plate at a time. A proven a miracle for some and a daily blessing for many.
On reflection, it seems much like in nature, no job is too small when sharing your focus, time and treasures as a volunteer at Trinity Cafe. Success is just a tiny miracle away.
